Laura and Harvey Brockmeyer
1922 - 2007 1916 - 2018

"TOGETHER AGAIN" The era of the Bakersfield Senior Brockmeyers ended with the death of Harvey on November 5, 2018. Harvey was born in Fargo, North Dakota, moving to Washington State, then to his dad's homestead in Wyoming in 1920. He attended a one-room school in Dry Creek, Wyoming and was active in 4H Club work, winning trips to Chicago, Washington D.C. and Denver. He got an MS degree from the University of Wyoming at Laramie in Agricultural Economics and taught at the university for one year. Harvey volunteered for the Air Force and won his "wings" in 1943 and was assigned as a flying instructor. He met Laura Cederquist while stationed at Minter Field and they married April 19, 1945.

After WW II they settled in Bakersfield and started teaching; Laura in grade school and Harvey in high school. Laura quit teaching when Richard was born in 1950 to become a fulltime mother and wife. Harvey taught at Bakersfield High School for 31 years. Beyond the Agricultural classroom he enjoyed the competitive Future Farmers of America activities. Three of his poultry judging teams won the California State Championships, with him taking them to the National Contests in Kansas City. He especially enjoyed the last trip, with son Richard achieving the Gold level in the competition - an "All American" status. Harvey and Laura took over 125 Future Farmer students on four, three-week Agricultural tours to Europe under Eisenhower's "People to People" program. This included several countries behind Russia's "Iron Curtain" during the Cold War era.

With retirement in 1977 they did extensive traveling in Europe, Japan, the Philippines, Canada, China and all 50 states. A yearlong VW camper trip to all of Europe and bits of Asia and Africa was the highlight! Harvey was active in community service work through Kiwanis, Mended Hearts, Kern Historical Society, Elderhostel and the 60+ Club at CSUB. For more detail review the book, a double autobiography, that Harvey and Laura coauthored, "The Golden Years of Teaching" from libraries at Beale, Bakersfield High or CSUB.

Survivors include son Richard and wife Cindy and their son Brett and wife Brianna, the California Cederquists, the Washington Brockmeyers and extended families in Europe, Canada, Japan and the US. Former students and Kiwanians founded the "Harvey and Laura Brockmeyer Scholarship Foundation". Memorials to South Bakersfield Kiwanis, Box 1561, Bakersfield, CA 93302; checks to "HLB Kiwanis Scholarship".

A Celebration of 102+ Years of Life is being planned for early December in Bakersfield.
