Our loving mother, Laveta Greenlee Welch, went home to be with Jesus on December 17, 2013. Mom was born on June 15, 1935, in Cache, Oklahoma, to Joe and Merle Christison and moved with her family to Bakersfield at age four. She attended Lakeside School and graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1952. Mom married Tommy Greenlee in 1957 and together they had five children. They were married until the time of Tommy's death in 1985. In 2002, Mom married Bueford Welch and they shared twelve years together. Mom worked many years for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph (which later became AT&T). After retirement, she was very active at the East Niles Senior Center and served as president at one time. Mom enjoyed Southern gospel music, reading, raspberry slushes from Sonic, family game nights, banana milkshakes, costume jewelry, "ox tails" from J'sPlace, Dr. Phil, breakfast at Molly J's, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and playing on the computer. Mom loved her many friends and church family. One of Mom's greatest loves was playing the piano and singing at her church. Most of all, Mom loved Jesus her entire life and we are so grateful to know she is at home with Him. Our hearts are sad, but we are so proud because Mom fought hard and finished strong. (2 Timothy 4:7). Mom is survived by her husband, Bueford Welch, her sister, Juanelle Whittington (Duane); her five children, Dawn Miller (Gary), Carrie Laird, Randy Greenlee (Renee), Darrin Greenlee (Todd), and Charla Castle (Brian); eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashley Castle; her sister, Jonita Morris; and her brother, Derald Christison. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hoffmann Hospice.
