Leni Cherry Obituary
Leni Cherry was born on December 14, 1924, and God welcomed her into paradise on July 4, 2015 after a brief illness. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and Omie.
Leni was born in Grunberg, Germany and was a dedicated Kindergarten teacher in Germany during World War II. She married the love of her life Captain Joseph Cherry following the war on October 16, 1948. Consequently, Leni proudly referred to herself as a "war bride." Leni and Joe shared 61 wonderful years together, and she always professed the time they had together was not nearly long enough.
Leni loved to cruise around the world via luxury ocean liners with Joseph, and they spent all their vacation time doing so. Leni also loved to cook and bake German meals and desserts for her family. Leni was extremely proud of her German heritage and her family and loved to extend her generosity. Her job was to take care of her family, and she particularly enjoyed spending quality time with her grandson Michael. She was overcome with joy with the birth of her great grandson AJ.
Leni never knew a stranger and was always accessible for her sage advice. She was sort of a social butterfly because of her magnetic personality, and her favorite pastime was playing bingo.
Leni is survived by her daughter Christiana Duncan and son-in-law Jack, son Anthony and daughter-in-law Terry, grandson Michael Duncan and granddaughter-in-law Shawndalyn, and her Angel, great grandson Anthony Joseph. The family would especially like to thank her friends Naomi Grontkowski, Annette Londquist, Karen Dewalt, Lee Bush and Irene Vanslager who watched over Leni whenever she needed extra help when the family was not available.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday 7-10-2015, at 11:00 am, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12300 Reina Road, Bakersfield CA. Graveside service will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd in Arvin on Monday, 07-13-2015 at 10:45 am.
