Lenwood Mitchell Slegers Obituary
Lenwood Mitchell Slegers September 14, 1923 - March 20, 2013 Lenwood Mitchell Slegers went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 20, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. He was 89 years old. The Lord richly blessed Len's life for which he gave thanks each and every day. Len was born in Sibley, Iowa on September 14, 1923, the youngest of 5 children born to Leonard and Jennie (Van Andel) Slegers. Len grew up on the family farm in Lake Benton, Minnesota. When he was 14, his family moved to Bellflower, California looking for opportunity in the dairy industry in the midst of the Great Depression. There he attended Bellflower Christian School and attended First Christian Reformed Church of Bellflower where he met the love of his life, Tess Jean de Groot. They were married 66 years and have 6 children; Janet (Miller Ne.) Hubert (Bakersfield) James (Kuna Id.) Mitchell (deceased) Frederick (Bakersfield) and Bennett (Bakersfield). Len was blessed with 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with the 4th expected in September. The Slegers Brothers Dairy, a partnership with Len's brother George, was established in 1945 in Artesia. A new dairy was built in Buena Park in 1950. Sadly, George passed on in 1951. The LM Slegers Dairy moved to Ontario Ca. in 1966 and then to Bakersfield, Ca. in 2003. Throughout his life Len served in many leadership positions in the dairy industry, the Bellflower and Ontario Christian Schools, and in the Christian Reformed Church. In the mid 1960s he served on the city council of Dairy Valley (La Palma). Len loved cows, deep sea fishing, golf, "Dutch Bingo", and his El Camino! But most of all, Len loved his family, and his God. "Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever".
