Leora E. Adams Obituary
Mrs. Leora E. Adams Mrs. Leora E. Adams passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice Center. A private memorial and burial will take place in Bakersfield, CA. Mrs. Adams was a McRae, GA native who moved to Atlanta after her schooling. She lived on Peachtree Street across from the renowned Fox Theatre and worked on B 24 aircraft during WWII as her small size allowed her to fit in the fuselage. Her life took a dramatic turn when her first husband became a victim of the war and she received his Medal of Honor. In 1945 Mrs. Adams boldly moved to Bakersfield, CA, to remarry and raise a family. After raising her two children, she had a 27-year career as a banker. Leora cherished her role as mother and took great joy in introducing her West Coast children to such southern fare as homemade biscuits, grits, and black-eyed-peas. Some would say she never completely lost her sweet southern accent. Although, she was happy to have CA friends westernize her name by simply calling her "Lea". Leora was quite a successful bridge player, having belonged to as many as six card groups, one original group that remained together for years. As a homemaker, she was an accomplished seamstress and cook, fondly remembered for her amazing apple pies. Leora also enjoyed exercising, taking belly dancing at 50 and riding her 10-speed bike into her 70's.. Her hobbies were golf and traveling, which included a memorable mother-daughter Mediterranean cruise. After 53 years in CA, Leora moved to Greenville, NC to be near her daughter and family. She could be seen faithfully in her front row seat in East Carolina University's Murphy Center overlooking the field every football season for the last 9 years. In addition to her parents, Minnie and Austin McLean, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and first husband, James Williams, second husband of 45 years, Charles E. "Chuck" Adams, a son, Greg L. Adams, sisters, Eunice Jackson, Elyse Edwards, and Sybil Brown, and brothers Austin McLean Jr. and Allen McLean. She is survived by: Daughter, Nancy Lea Ballard and husband, Steve, and Grandson Nathan Greg "Nate" Ballard, all of Greenville; Granddaughter, Laine Cathryn Ballard of San Francisco, CA; Brother Elton McLean of McRae, GA and many beloved nieces and nephews of FL, GA, AL and CA. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers at Cypress Glen and Vidant Inpatient Hospice. Memorial donations in Leora's honor may be made to East Carolina University Foundation, Inc. for the support of the Leora E Adams Family Endowment for Wounded Warriors. Contributions can be sent to: Tammy Garris, Director of Gift Records, University Advancement, Greenville Centre, 2200 S. Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858, Mail Stop:301.
