Leroy attended local schools, graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1959. He was quick to tell people, "Once a Driller, always a Driller!" After graduating high school, Leroy started his career with the County as an orderly at Kern General Hospital.
Leroy joined the National Guard in November 1960, where he was a Senior Radio Mechanic and obtained the rank of Sergeant (E-5). He was honorably discharged in November 1966. He joined the Kern County Sheriff's Department in _September 1966. He worked various assignments throughout his career including Patrol, K-9 and Detectives. After 27 years of dedicated service he retired as a Commander in March 1994.
Leroy continued to serve his community as a member of The People's Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Bakersfield Host Lions. He loved working the Lion's booth at the Kern County Fair, as he said he loved meeting new people and it kept him young at heart.
Leroy's graveside service will be on Monday, September 28th, 11:00 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park, all are invited to attend. He didn't want a funeral, he wanted a party. Tell the great stories, the good jokes, the happy memories, but do not be sad for a man who lived a great life filled with friends and family. No suits, no dark clothes, you are to dress for celebration!!!!! Honor the man by sharing the joy that was his life. We are to celebrate the life that he lived. There will be a repast immediately following at The People's Missionary Church, 1451 Madison Street and all are invited to attend.
