Born to Allen and Laura Saffell on July 1, 1909 on a farm in Clark County, Iowa, Lila was the third of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. Lila grew up on a farm near Van Wert, Iowa, and graduated from Van Wert High School. After completing one term of college, she passed the teachers examination and taught school in a one-room schoolhouse with 26 pupils, earning $60.00 per month in her first year. In April of 1930, Lila married George "Jack" Redman. To this union, three children - Carroll, Floyd, and Janice- were born. The family farmed for a living in the early 30's during the draught and depression. In addition to helping out on the farm, Lila raised chickens for sale, gardened, canned and boarded the schoolteacher, all the while still raising their three children. In 1946, the family moved to Bakersfield, where Lila attended college 4 nights a week and worked at Eastern Outfitting six days a week. She became employed as a bookkeeper at the Kern County Housing Authority in 1947 and grew to become Executive Director in 1963, finishing a successful 10-year term until her retirement in 1973. During her tenure at the Housing Authority, Lila was happily married to her second husband, William J Little, in June of 1955. Lila became a life-long member of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment where she held all executive positions and covered the entire Southwest Region, including California, Arizona, and Nevada. Lila was also active in the Women's Chamber of Commerce, the Quota Club and other civic organizations. After retirement from the housing Authority, Lila enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and traveling, where she visited every State in the Union. Lila was baptized at Weldon Christian Church at the age of 13 and attended church regularly, becoming a member of Kern City Community Church after her retirement. Preceding her in death are her husband William Little and grandson George F. Redman. Lila is survived by her children: Carroll Redman (Janet) of Smithfield NC, Floyd Redman (Betty) of Atascadero, CA and Janice Best (Kenneth) of Bakersfield CA.
