Lois Pavletich Obituary

Lois America Pavletich 1917 - 2010 Lois America Pavletich (Penny), loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, friend, died November 30, 2010, at the age of 93. Penny was born in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, August 3, 1917 to John E. and Sarrah E. (Beckham) Nickell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, George J. Pavletich, Sr.; son, George J. Pavletich, Jr.; brothers, Rex and Nolan; sisters, Opal, Agnes, Bonnie, Berneice; four brothers-in-law; and two sisters- in-law. Surviving are her daughter, Ethelene (Bill) Ward; son, Neal (Lena) Pavletich; daughter, Carol (Hank) Wilcox; daughter-in-law, Mrs. George (Linda) Pavletich; 26 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Penny's imprint of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is etched on the hearts of everyone whose life she touched. She was actively involved as a member of Shafter Church of Christ. Friends fondly recall her tenacious efforts in founding the Springer, New Mexico Church of Christ in 1946. She had a heart of compassion expressed through hospitality of a simple meal from the garden or Sunday dinner complete with sumptuous pies, cakes, and, her personal favorite - chocolate anything, served with a broad smile, attentive listening ear, and sage advice. The perfect ending to any gathering was a "quick" game of dominos, Skipbo, Aggravation or a sing-a-long around the piano. Grandma Penny's handmade afghans and quilts will continue to warm so many hearts and toes. Her watercolor paintings are character trait reminders of determination, willpower and constancy, given the fact that Penny was legally blind in one eye and didn't begin this art medium until she was "aging gracefully". Funeral arrangements will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday December 4, 2010, Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA. Memorial donations in Penny's honor may be mailed to the George Pavletich, Jr. Scholarship Fund, Bakersfield College, 1801 Panorama Drive 93305, Attn: Joan Wegner; American Cancer Society; or other charitable organization of your choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Edward Nichols and staff; Mercy Hospital doctors and staff at 2 West; Kara, Cindi, and Mercy Hospice; caregivers Paula, Fran, Janice, Flo and our huge network of friends for your prayers, care and unending support. www.bakersfield.com/obits

When I recall my first visit with Grandma Penny, I Remember seeing this tiny woman and the first thing you notice was her wit, charm and wisdom. One could spend an hour or two with her and it would seem like you knew her your whole life. Whenever Christine and I came for a visit from Washington State, she would not let us go without fresh vegetables from Grandpa George's garden. We always looked forward to getting Christmas letters from her. She was a wonderful and insightful writer. She will be missed terribly, but we can take some comfort in knowing she is reunited with Both George Sr. & George Jr. My love and prayers go to our family and her many friends!

It was a joy and a privilege to know Penny. I will miss getting her Christmas letter, but am comforted in knowing she is spending the holiday with Him in person.

Our love and prayers go out to all the Pavletich family. Penny was a beautiful woman, inside and out. I have wonderful memories of time spent with her and George and know my parents thought the world of them. May God give you all peace and comfort during this very difficult time.
