Lois Evelyn Mangrum Roberts Obituary
Lois Evelyn Mangrum Roberts 1926-2013 Dearly loved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Lois Evelyn Mangrum Roberts was born June 9, 1926 in Checotah, Oklahoma, to Bernice and Cordia Terry Mangrum. She was raised on her maternal grandfather's farm without electricity or indoor plumbing. During the Dustbowl, her family traveled to California where they lived at Weedpatch Camp. As a teenager, she went to live with family friends while her mother and older sister were in the tuberculosis sanitarium in Keene CA. She attended East Bakersfield High School. She loved to dance and once was crowned 'Jitterbug Queen.' She also loved to sing and enjoyed being a member of several duet and trio groups. While she was working at Kern General Hospital in the dietician department, she met tall, handsome, Johnny C. Roberts, Jr. on a blind date. He took her to shoot pool. After a three month courtship, they married on January 11, 1947 in Reno, Nevada. They were blessed with two children, Sandra and Michael. The family worshiped at Hillcrest Southern Baptist Church where Lois taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Later they became members of Westchester Baptist Church, continuing their faithful Christian Stewardship. Lois loved baking and was famous for her peach cobbler. Her kitchen table was never without a freshly baked pound cake, which Johnny enjoyed eating three times a day. Johnny and Lois spent many summers camping in their travel trailer at Pismo State Beach with Sandra and their four Grandchildren. Lois passed from this earthly life to eternal salvation on July 27, 2013, rejoining her mother, father, sister, Gladys Cotton, brother, Monroe Mangrum, and her husband of 52 1/2 years, Johnny, whom she outlived by 14 years. That day was one of rejoicing and reuniting with her many loved ones. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sandra Williamson and son, Michael Roberts; her beloved Grandchilden and Great Grandchildren, who were the joy of her life: Jason Williamson, wife, Kimberly, daughter, Kenzi; Joshua Williamson, wife, Donna, daughters, Hannah and Ella; Jacob Williamson; Jayme Williamson Barton, husband, Lance, daughter Meghan and son Braden; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was our faithful counselor, strongest defender and diligent guardian on earth and she continues to keep a watchful eye from Heaven's Gate. A celebration of her legacy will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at First Assembly of God, Blue Chapel, 4901 California Avenue. Special thanks to Joean, Yolanda, Chelsea, Maria and the nurses at Hoffman Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to . www.bakersfield.com/obits
