Louise Nelson Elam was born March 26, 1927 in New York City and passed away January 26, 2016 in Tucson, AZ. Louise was a resident of Bakersfield, CA from 1950 to 2013, prior to moving to Wisconsin to be near her son, Mark, and then to Tucson, AZ, to be near her daughter, Marcia.
Louise grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Pasadena as a teenager, and graduated from UC Berkeley, where she met her first husband, Sam Glasser. They moved to Bakersfield in 1950 and together raised four children: Mark Glasser of Hartland, WI, Marcia Malkoun of Tucson, AZ, Joan Centofanti of Los Altos, CA, and Charlotte Glasser of New York City, NY. The family was active for many years in the First Baptist Church and the Bakersfield Racquet Club.
Louise taught for 20 years in the Bakersfield City School District, and was an active substitute teacher after her retirement in 1986. She was widely respected by her students for being an excellent and caring teacher.
In 1971, Louise married Raymond Elam of Taft, CA. During their retirement, they played golf, spent time with friends in Bakersfield, and traveled across the country in their RV. They were active members of Canyon Hills Church where Louise enjoyed singing in the choir. Ray passed away in 2010. Louise continued to pursue singing and bible study during her last years.
Louise is survived by her 4 children, her sister Claire Tierney, and her 6 grandchildren: Heidi Glasser (along with great grandson Conor Villaroman), Kyle Glasser, Marcello Centofanti, Francesca Centofanti, Alex Benepe, and Erik Benepe.
Louise died of complications from Alzheimer's disease, and will be missed by her loving family.
