Margaret Elaine Garnand Obituary
Margaret Elaine Garnand February 19, 1945 - November 12, 2012 Margaret Elaine Garnand was born to Ruth and Warren Hal Bruckner on February 19, 1945 in Santa Monica, California. She grew up across the street from the sandy beaches until she moved to Bakersfield where she attended and graduated South High School in 1963. While attending South High she met Carl Garnand at a dance at the fairgrounds. In 1963 they married and began their 49 years together. Carl often called her his "little dover-dove". They had three sons - Brent, Blake, and Lance. Maggie loved kids and worked as a teachers' aide for several years at Greenfield Junior High. She was truly an inspiration, when at the age of 40 she went back to school to get her degree and teaching credential. She taught at Planz Elementary for 10 years. Many children have learned how to read and understand books by her patient instruction. She developed pulmonary fibrosis and in 2002 Maggie underwent a lung transplant surgery that saved her life and allowed her to continue to do the things she loved - teach, quilt, travel with her husband, and enjoy her 5 grandchildren. She had several health scares over the last few years as her good lung declined in strength. On November 12, 2012 at the age of 67 she passed away at Mercy Hospital with her family at her side. She is survived by her husband Carl Garnand; her sons and their families - son Brent, son Blake and his wife Cathleen, their children Aedan and Kelly, and son Lance and his pregnant wife Laurel, and their children Owen, Ella, Madelynn, and unborn Noah, as well as her brother Mike Bruckner and his wife Diane, and brother Eric Stedman. Maggie was inspirational, kind, patient, and understanding. She made the best pumpkin and pecan pies! She is loved by many and will be incredibly missed. Her wish was to be cremated, and a gathering to remember and honor her will be held in December for close friends and family.
