Margaret Elaine Shellstrom Brewer was born November 18, 1917, in Fresno, to Alice Atwater and Charles Tanner. She was adopted on December 14 to her loving parents, Werner and Opal Shellstrom. They raised their sweet daughter on a small farm just outside of Kingsburg, where she enjoyed playing in the barn and canning peaches.
She met Dale Brewer when she was in high school and the two married two years later on July 4, 1936. They moved to Bakersfield in 1938 to start their family. Their bond of love lasted just two weeks short of 60 years.
In their wonderful time together, Dale and Margaret ran their business, Brewer Mortgage Company, for over 30 years. They had 3 boys: Russell Lee, Alan Dale, and Timothy Darrel. Russell passed shortly after birth, but Alan and Timothy did their best to keep their parents busy raising two boisterous, happy and healthy boys.
Dale and Margaret enjoyed traveling the world together, and continued to split their California vacation time between weeklong family trips in Cayucos, or holiday weekends up in Camp Nelson.
Margaret was an avid lover of music and enjoyed attending dances and musicals. She played the violin in her high school orchestra. She was involved in the choir at First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where she also worked in the office and participated in numerous events. Margaret loved her church, and she loved her Lord.
Sweet and loving, warm and caring, Margaret was truly a gift to us all. Her gentle nature was a breath of fresh air, and her smile and laughter were contagious. She enjoyed her 98 years on this earth, and always felt blessed to be gifted with the happy life she lived, a devoted family by her side until the end, and the love of her Lord.
Margaret is preceded in death by her loving husband, Dale, two of her sons, Russell and Alan, her parents, and her younger sister, Shirley.
Her memory lives on with her son Timothy (Laurie), her daughter-in-law, Beverly, her granddaughters Elaine Crozier, Karen Hurst (David), and Chelsea Brewer, and her grandson, Matt (Jill). She is also survived by her six great-grandchildren, Brett and Andrea Crozier, Alan James, Laura and Abigail Hurst, and Ryan Brewer.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Optimal Hospice for making Margaret's journey in her last months a comfortable and peaceful one, and for helping us through this difficult transition. A very special and heartfelt thank you to the staff at Joyful Living Care Home: Joel, Lelani, Dora, Linda, & Lourdes, you are angels on this earth and you have truly been a gift to Margaret and her entire family. Our gratitude is endless.
