Marguerite (Peggy) Adams Obituary
Peggy Adams (93) passed away peacefully on May 9. Peggy was born in Calgary, Canada, one of 8 children of John and Mary Richards. She was the youngest and last surviving of the 5 daughters who became of age. When she was two years old, the family moved to California settling in Santa Monica. She spoke often of her fond memories of growing up there and especially attending Santa Monica High. At the age of 17 family needs brought her to Bakersfield where she graduated from Kern Union High School in 1939.
Peggy then went to work for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration followed by Giumarra Bros. until 1946 when she married Clyde W Adams. They settled in Bakersfield permanently in 1950.
Peggy was one of the founders of the Kern Adult Literacy Council where she volunteered to teach adults to read for more than 20 years. Given her passion for the considerate treatment of animals and concern about the overpopulation of dogs and cats she helped start the Kern Humane Society Thrift shop in 1974, where to this day, all the proceeds go to assist in the cost of spaying and neutering.
She was an avid gardener and found great joy in the time spent with her many flowers and ferns. She will be remembered by friends for the many luncheons and teas she hosted in her garden.
As her eyesight deteriorated from macular degeneration she became an active participant at the Center for the Blind, developing many new friendships and serving for a time on their Board of Directors.
Peggy was widowed in 1981. She is survived by her daughters and son in laws Linda Webb (Dave) and Jean Phillimore (Bill) and her granddaughters Jamie Franscioni (Lorenzo), Jennifer Hudgins, Kate Phillimore (Phil Gilbert) and Emily Holman (Mark) as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
The family would like to thank all of the dear friends and caregivers who enabled Peggy to remain at home for so many years to enjoy the garden and home that she loved.
Graveside services will be private with a Celebration of Life held at a later date. In lieu of flowers Peggy requested that donations be made to the Kern Humane Society, 2111 Brundage Ln, Bakersfield, CA 93304 or the SPCA 3000 Gibson St, Bakersfield, CA 93308
