Maria Lucia Gonzalez Obituary
Maria Lucia Gonzalez thoroughly enjoyed life until she was called by our Lord and Savior on June 29, 2014. Lucia, as she was affectionately known, was a unique person characterized by her strong work ethic, good moral values, and unselfishness to provide for her children throughout her life, with a caring attitude towards helping relatives, friends, and even strangers. Mom also had a tenacious determination to succeed, which lead, husband, Juan A. Gonzalez, and their four children to legally migrant to the United States in 1956. She also had a strong pioneering spirit that was instrumental in establishing roots in the U S, first in El Paso, TX and then in Bakersfield, CA with her five children.
Mom was born in Durango, Mexico to Antonio Alvarez and Mariana Maldonado on February 17, 1930. She was the fifth of eight children.
Lucia was preceded in death by her parents, husband Juan A. Gonzalez, four sisters, Rosa, Aurelia, Rafaela, Francisca, two brothers Aniceto, Everesto Alvarez, and her beloved daughter Maria Antonieta Cortez. Mom is survived by brother Francisco Alvarez, daughters Irma Rubio (Guillermo), Delia Fabela (Joe), sons Jesus R. Gonzalez, Miguel A. Gonzalez (Christine), 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
As the years went by, mom enjoyed learning English and became a US citizen passing the citizenship exam in English. She enjoyed her grandchildren as well as her great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Mom also enjoyed doing arts and craft especially weaving.
She also had a passion for music something her father instilled in her, which helped mom learn to play the harp. Mom also enjoyed listening to her favorite songs and singers such as Cuco Sanchez, Antonio Aguilar, and El Charro Avitia.
Mom you have left us, but you will always be present in our thoughts and in our hearts. Thank you for always been there. Because of your uniqueness, we have been triumphant in our lives. We will see you again and rejoice. GOD BLESS YOU!!
Visitation will be at Basham Funeral Care, 3312 Niles St., on July 9, 2014 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Religious service in her honor will be held on July 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 609 California Ave. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
