Martha Jane Jones Obituary
Martha Jane Jones, born Martha Jane Schirm March 17, 1921, in Middletown, Ohio, passed away January 1, 2015, in Bakersfield, California, from the complications following a fall and a subsequent stroke. She was ninety three.
After high school Martha completed a two year secretarial course at Miami University of Ohio, and worked as a secretary until retirement, first at the ARMCO steel mill in Middletown, then at the Planning Department for the City of Bakersfield. She moved to Bakersfield in the early 1950s after marrying Marvin L. "Pete" Jones, a musician who eventually owned and operated Pete Jones Music on Baker Street. Pete was also from Middletown, but he adapted to the West, especially in riding for exercise and pleasure; he even qualified to join the Sherriff's Posse. He also devoted himself to boosting the Bakersfield Symphony. Martha was his helpmate in both enthusiasms, volunteering for the Symphony, participating the Auxiliary of the Posse, and learning to ride well enough herself to enjoy summer vacations at a lodge in Montana where she could ride trails once ridden by Theodore Roosevelt. After Pete's untimely death in 1988, Martha lived quietly.
She was sweet to nearly everyone. She was a beloved aunt to one niece who predeceased her, and five nephews. She was a fun great aunt to more great nieces and nephews than are convenient to count. She enjoyed going to high school and junior college football games when she had a great nephew or two in the game.
She is survived by her sister, Mary E. Smith, and five nephews, two in Bakersfield, and three in Ohio.
Her family is appreciative to Kern Rehabilitation for their care of her during the last weeks of life, and especially grateful to Tina of the Heritage assisted care facility where Martha spent her last year or so for Tina's many kindnesses and assistance.
There will be no formal services. If you wish to remember Martha, please consider a contribution to the Bakersfield Symphony.
