Marvin Elis Olson Obituary
Marv was born on November 13, 1923, in Wausa, Nebraska, to Bengt and Nellie Olson. He lived in Nebraska until the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD.
He was at a carnival where he first saw the love of his life, Patricia Dooley, riding the Ferris wheel. He knew from that first moment that he would marry her, but duty called. Marvin joined the Army in June of 1944. He served as a Sergeant in WWII in Okinawa until April 1946. After leaving the Army, he returned to Sioux Falls, SD. Patricia and Marv were married on August 12, 1946, in Ramona, SD. He worked as a manager of a grain elevator, and they began their family. In 1965 they moved to Bakersfield, California.
When his children started playing baseball, he became involved in the Greenfield Baseball Association. This involvement led to the beginning of many lifelong friendships. He participated in the association in many ways, from coaching to board member, president to field maintenance. He dedicated himself to making sure all the kids in the league had a safe environment to play baseball.
Marv started in the insurance business in 1965 and joined George Roberts Insurance in 1967. He then went on to become partner in Kern Insurance Associates. He retired on August 1, 2004, to pursue his true passion, golf.
Marv was the epitome of a gentleman. His kindness and good nature were known to all. He has left behind the family he built with love.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Olson; parents, Bengt and Nellie Olson; sister, Arlene Dyer; brother, Alan Olson; and grandson, Nicholas Bumerts. He is survived by brother, Don Olson; children Andrea (Dave) Cummings, Patti (Mike) Brokken, Carol (Ron) Sherrill, Brian (Sue) Olson, Tony (Valerie) Olson, and Kelly (Lisa) Olson. Also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, David Cummings, Laurie Grissom, Alexa Bumerts, Nikki Stiles, Patrick Sherrill, Robyn Kyles, Julee Olson, Katie Mitchell, Kaycee Olson, Kendra Merrell, and Seth Merrell, and 11 great-grandchildren.
