Mary Curran Means Obituary
Mary Curran Means was born Mary Elise Curran on November 27, 1927, at home in Bakersfield, California to Robert Emmett Curran and Yvonne Borel Curran. Mary passed away peacefully at her home in Bakersfield surrounded by family on July 18, 2015.
Mary attended local schools, Longfellow, Washington Jr. High School and East Bakersfield High School (1945), and was very proud to be an East Bakersfield High Blade. Mary went on after high school to attend Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California.
Mary married the love of her life, Harvey Hugh Means on March 4, 1949. The couple spent the next few years in San Francisco where Harvey attended law school and Mary was a Supervisor for the Phone Company. The couple returned home to Bakersfield in 1953, beginning Harvey's law career and to start their family which eventually included three daughters.
Mary had a great love for the community of Bakersfield and Kern County. She was a past member of the Kern County and Assistance League of Bakersfield, including holding the office of President. Mary went on to become a Director of the Ben H. and Gladys Arkelian Foundation and The Harry and Ethel West Foundation, until the time of her passing.
Mary was first and foremost always a lady with a kind and generous spirit. Her family, friends and the community of Bakersfield meant everything to her.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Robert Emmett Curran and Yvonne Borel Curran, and her husband Harvey Hugh Means. Mary is survived by her three siblings, Sally Curran Foster, Irene Curran Steele and Daniel Robert (Bob) Curran; her daughters Mary G. Means Segal (John), Joan Means Hanford, and Ann Means Dunlap; three grandchildren, Tara Hanford, Elliott Dunlap and Adrienne Fairman (Bert), and one great-grand-son, Landon Morse. Mary is also survived by her nieces and nephews of whom she loved dearly.
