Mary Ellen McGrath Obituary

Mary Ellen McGrath died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, April 13, 2016. She was predeceased by her parents, George Dominick and Mary Agnes McGrath, and is survived by her brother, Charles, his wife Beverlee, and nieces and nephews, John (his wife, Monica), Debbie (her husband, Martin), Daniel (his wife, Phyllis), and Bridget (her husband, David), and grandnieces and nephews, Stephanie, Rachel, Sarah, Dominick, Mina and Christian, and great-grandnieces and nephews, Emma, Abby, Milo, Gracie and Nora.

Mary Ellen was born in Oxnard March 10, 1940 and was a fourth generation member of the McGrath family. She attended Marymount College in Westwood and graduated from St. Leo's University in St. Leo's, Florida, class of 1962.

After college, Mary Ellen worked in the legal department of Occidental Petroleum headquarters located in Westwood, Los Angeles. In the early 1980's, at the corporation's high recommendation, she transferred to Occidental's Oil and Gas division headquarters in Bakersfield to work as Executive Assistant to the division's President and CEO. During her 20 years working there, the division made major international oil discoveries, finding some of the largest oil fields in OXY's history and doubling the company's growth. Mary Ellen's loyalties, skills and efficiency in aiding this effort were outstanding and exceptional. International and domestic government leaders and company executives dealing with OXY had to pass through Mary Ellen first.

After retiring, she joined her parents in Montecito and became active in the Assistance League of Santa Barbara, Friendship with St. Leo's, in Florida, and held a position as a director in Villa Majella of Santa Barbara.

A decade of the rosary and funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Montecito, located on E. Valley Road and Hot Springs Road, at 1:00 on Thursday, April 21st, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, 530 Hot Springs Road, Santa Barbara, CA, 93108; or Villa Majella of Santa Barbara, 604 No. Kellogg Ave., Santa Barbara, CA, 93111.
