Mary L. Hohm October 6, 1921 - March 17, 2012 Mary L. Hohm, 90, passed away surrounded by her loving family on March 17, 2012 at her home in Glenwood Gardens. Mary was born to Alfred and Amelia Malnati of Milford, Massachusetts in 1921. Mary had three bothers Alfred, Jimmy, and Alvin, and one sister Anita, all deceased. Mary had the great misfortune to lose her mother at childbirth. However, she was entrusted to the care of a loving Italian couple, the Balconis. Eventually, when her father remarried, Mary returned to the care of her family, and two new brothers, Angelo and Charles San Clemente, who meant the world to her. She continued to enjoy every summer with the Balconis, her "adoptive" family. After high school, Mary attended Business College in Boston, and then worked as a secretary at General Motors. In Boston, Mary met her first true love, Donald Ingle, who was attending Harvard Law School. Mary and Don married in 1949, and moved to Chicago Illinois, where her husband pursued his law career and Mary pursued her love of baseball, transferring her loyalty from the Boston Red Sox to the Chicago Cubs. The family moved to the suburb of Lake Bluff, where their three children were born, Donald, Joanne, and Charles Ingle. Unfortunately, in 1959, personal tragedy struck Mary's life again when her husband died in an accident. Mary spent the next six years as a single mother dedicating her life to raising her children. In 1965, Mary had the great fortune to meet the second love of her life, Fred Warfield Hohm. Fred, a World War II Veteran, had lost his wife, Lorraine, the previous year. Fred also had two children, Carla and Mike Hohm, who needed a mother just as Mary's three children needed a father. Mary and Fred spent the next decade raising their blended family in Lake Bluff, Illinois. Mary volunteered her time to assist the church and those in need. For many, many years she delivered Wheels on Meals for Lake Forest Hospital. She organized and assisted at St. Mary's annual rummage sale. She was an expert at pricing the antiques (her life-long passion). Mary knew of every antique and second hand shop in the greater Chicago area, or as she referred to them, "my stores." In 1976, after a successful career as an AT&T executive, Fred retired. Mary and Fred moved to their lovely farm in Spring Prairie, outside of Burlington, Wisconsin. Here, Fred pursued his second career as a farmer and naturalist. Mary gardened, canned, fished and cooked for all the visiting friends and grandchildren. She continued to volunteer her time at St. Vincent's De Paul (St. Vinnie's) in Burlington. In 2008, Fred and Mary sold the farm, and moved out to Bakersfield California to be near their daughter. Mary is survived by her loving husband Fred Hohm, her five children, Donald Ingle, Joanne Carrillo, Mike Hohm, Carla Hohm and Charles Ingle, eight grandchildren, Sonya Carrillo, Candace Carrillo, Iris Carrillo of Bakersfield California, Juan-Carlos Nadal of Hartford, Connecticut, Valarie Davis and David Ingle at University of Missouri, Spencer Ingle at University of Chicago and Carson Ingle at University of Minnesota. The family would like to extend sincerest thanks to the caring staff at Mercy Hospice, especially, Shelagh Landi RN and Maria Rosales. We also greatly appreciate the wonderful staff at All Home Care. Sincere thanks to Patti Allen-Miller. And to the Chicago Cubs we are still waiting, and Mary will be there with the angels in the outfield. www.bakersfield.com/obits
