Mary Lee Smith was born on October 7, 1921 in Taft, California to High and Ruby Brown. She grew up in Taft and graduated from Taft High School in 1938. She was accepted at Franklin Hospital's newly added School of Nursing in San Francisco where she earned her degree and Nursing (RN) Certificate. Shortly after returning to Taft, she met and married John "Jack" Smith in 1942. They had a son and a daughter.
Mary Lee worked at Taft Community Hospital for 16 years which was built and owned by her Mother-in-Law, Norma Smith, while Jack was a popular disc-jockey at KTKR Radio Station.
In 1958. Mary Lee and her family moved to Bakersfield and built a home in East Bakersfield where she lived until she passed away.
Mary Lee quickly found a job as a Surgery Nurse for Dr. Marion C. Barnard at Niles Medical and Surgical Group, where she stayed until she retired in 2001. Mary Lee was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her patients.
Mary Lee had many interests. She loved to travel and garden. Mary Lee sent as much time as possible with family and kept in close contact with friends and neighbors. She also had a great love for her pets, Peanuts, Rudy and Barbie.
Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband John "Jack"A. Smith and her parents Hugh and Ruby Brown. She is survived by her sister, Billie Pinnick Lovmark; her son Duane Smith; her daughter Georgette Smith; her nieces Cassandra Pinnick Rodgers, Cynthia Pinnick Stadelman and Shawna Romine; and her nephew Mike Wells.
A grave side service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to the SPCA. For additional information, please contact Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary at 661-366-5766.
