Mary Louise Robinson Lake Obituary
Mary Louise Robinson Lake was born on December 13, 1921 in Bakersfield, and passed away on September 19, 2014 after a long illness. Mary was preceded in death by Walter "Jerry" Lake, her loving husband, partner and friend for over 70 years. Mother to John (wife Sheila), Robert (wife Susan) and Cynthia Lake; grandmother to John Paul (wife Ingrid), Ryan Lake, David (wife Jennifer), and Carolyn Lake; and great grandmother to Troy, Thomas and Olivia Lake. Mary enjoyed many precious family celebrations.
She was raised on the family farm on Norris Road by her beloved mother Iva and father Horace "Nesh" Nesham Robinson, whose family emigrated from England. She loved Norris school where she attended from Kindergarten through 8th grade before graduating from Kern County Union High School, now BHS, in 1939.
She married Jerry in 1943 at Yale University. Shortly thereafter, he was deployed overseas, with the 8th Air Force in World War II. Members of the greatest generation, the couple willingly endured the challenges of the war so they could raise their children in a great and free nation.
After the war, they moved to Los Angeles. Mary worked while Jerry completed his engineering degree at USC. Moving back to Bakersfield in 1948, the couple started their family. Mary was involved in the PTA, Cub Scouts, enjoyed her time in Assistance League and was a lifelong member of the BHS Golden Girls Club.
Mary enjoyed her artistic abilities as she painted in all different mediums. After attending Bakersfield Jr. College and business school, her education continued through her love of reading until her eyesight began to fail. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Jerry and daughter Cynthia. Faithful, considerate and thoughtful, Mary enjoyed writing often, sending notes and thank you cards. Mary is survived by her sister Nancy Robinson Wolfe, brother in-law Bob Wolfe and nephews David (wife Laurel), Jeff (wife Lori), Jim (wife Laura) and their children, as well as her sister in-law Diane Lake, nephews Chris and Greg Lake, and children.
Mary and Jerry enjoyed many lifelong friends. The Lake family would like to extend their many thanks to Stacy and Felecia Valadez for their 12 years of faithful and loving care for our parents.
Mary's graveside service will be private, per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance can be made to the Norris School library, recently named in her honor, the Assistance League of Bakersfield, Tree Foundation of Kern or .
