Mary Opal Whitten Stackhouse December 31, 1913 - July 27, 2013 Born December 31, 1913 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Albert and May Lake. Died July 27, 2013 at the age of 99 in San Luis Obispo, California. Opal is survived by her son Roy Allen Whitten and wife Jane of Pismo Beach, CA; daughter Norma Jean Lane and husband Doc Lane of Grants Pass, OR. grandsons James Russell, Anthony Russell, Christopher Terres and Richard Whitten; granddaughters Teresa Dyatt and Karen Lovett of Bakersfield, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Opal was preceded by husband Lee Roy Whitten; second husband Donald Stackhouse; grandsons Ronald Whitten and Gregory Russell; great grandson James Anthony Russell; brothers Glen Lake and Albert Lake; and sisters Mildred Falls and Thelma Stricker. Opal and her family moved from Oklahoma to Bakersfield, California during the Dust Bowl days in 1937, seeking a better life. They farmed for many years south of Bakersfield. Opal was employed at Brundage Variety and J.C. Pennys in Bakersfield, CA. She was known by her family for her wonderful cooking skills and was a second mother to many. In 2008, Opal moved to San Luis Obispo, CA to be near her son, Roy Whitten, who cared for her in her final days.
