Melza Joseph Chaney, known to his family and his friends as Mel, passed away on February 14, 2014 in Fresno, CA. He was 82. Viewing at Lanes Family 1303 Glenwood St. will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2014. Graveside funeral at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at North Kern Cemetery in Delano, California.
Mel was born in Los Angeles, CA on May 28, 1931. He grew up in the Columbine and Richgrove, CA area. After he graduated from Delano High School, Mel enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. After serving in the Navy for four years, Mel returned to Richgrove, CA and went into partnership with his brother in the grocery business. During the latter part of the 1960s, Mel sold his share of the grocery business to his brother, Richard and opened the Paradise Club across the street. During the 1980s Mel sold his bar business and moved to Pixley. During the next 25 years, Mel lived in Tulare, Visalia and Fresno. Mel was preceded in death by his parents Ham and Lena Mae Chaney; one Brother, Raymond Chaney; one sister Virginia Rowland; one nephew Larry Rowland; one sister-in-law Wilma Chaney and one brother-in-law Gerald Branch. Survivors include brother-Richard Chaney of Delano; Sister-Ruth Branch of Oregon; and brother Lon Chaney and his wife Zana Chaney in Delano and many nephews and nieces.
