Michael Absher Obituary
Michael Jay Absher, 52, died July 1, 2015 with his wife Lisa and daughters Courtney and Caitlin by his side in Palo Alto, California. His final days were spent with his stepsons, Nicholas, Christopher and Matthew and his closest family and friends.
Michael was born April 15,1963 to Ben and Berma Absher in Bakersfield, California. His sense of discipline and work ethic was formed early in his childhood and set the foundation for the man he was throughout his life. He was a much loved son, father, husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, friend and mentor to many. He was a strong stable rock, a wise guide and a voice of reason. He was tough, and had an "I'll do it my way" attitude! He was a "cowboy" at heart and a man of his word. He was an extremely generous, kind and sincere man, always there for anyone who needed him.
Michael worked hard, but played hard too. If he wasn't up at Tejon Ranch, he was daydreaming about the next time he could get there. He loved setting up camp, hunting, fishing and kicking around in the great outdoors. He loved spending time with his very dear extended "Tejon Family." His favorite memories of Tejon were being around the campfire, BBQ'ing with everyone, and listening to country music with a cold beer in his hand.
Michael was especially proud if his BBQ'ing skills, and for good reason! He also loved cooking big country breakfasts, visiting around the dinner table for hours, or packing up an ice chest and taking a day trip to the ocean. He emphasized the importance of family and nurturing relationships. Those who knew him knew that when he called you a friend, you became family - and it was for life. He imparted multiple "gems of wisdom" to many, which were often called "Michaelisms." These gems might make an impact on your life, or would sometimes just give you a good laugh!
Michael was blessed with two beautiful, intelligent, strong and extraordinary daughters. They were his pride and joy! He was also blessed to find Lisa, the love of his life, soul mate and best friend. Lisa and Michael were able to pack a lifetime of joy, laughter, and happiness in the twelve years they shared together.
Michael is preceded in death by his mother Berma Absher and father-in-law Fred Laningham. He is survived by his wife Lisa, his daughters Courtney and Caitlin Absher, stepsons Nick, Chris, and Matt Sakowski, father Ben Absher, brother Tim Absher (wife Kris; children Julieanna, Lizzy and Ben), sister Gaylene Schaefer (husband Ed/"Gumby"), "Lil Brother" Dougie Robinson (wife GeAnn), mother in-law Carol Laningham, brother-in law Fred Laningham (wife Laura; children Haley, Hunter and Hagen), Reifel and Howze families and best friends Tye Love, Tim Schaufelberger and Rick Valdez.
A special thank you to the doctors and nurses for their excellent care at Stanford University Medical Center. Their loving care, compassion, humor and support in Michael's last days will forever be remembered by us all. We would like to sincerely thank his brother-in-law Dr. Fred Laningham, who was instrumental in giving Michael's friends and family the additional time to spend with us for the past year and a half. Michael will be dearly missed by all.....
A "Celebration of Life" service will be held on July 10th, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary on Panama Lane, with an "Absher Style BBQ" in his honor to follow.
