Mildred passed peacefully of natural causes at her Columbus Estates apartment in Bakersfield. Born in Cumberland, Maryland, she moved to Los Angeles as a pre-teen and graduated from Los Angeles High School. She married Walter L. Tarr in 1937 and shortly thereafter they moved to Bakersfield, where she lived until her passing. Mildred worked for nearly 60 years in retail saies, retiring three weeks before her 80th birthday. She worked for stores like Thrifty Drug Store, Sears, Eastern Clothing Store (17 years until it closed), The Coed Dress Shop (30 years) and Gottschalks (8 years). She was very involved in community and church activities, including among others, Toastmasters, Guild House, Woman's Club of Bakersfield, American Business Women's Association, and Northminster Presbyterian Church. She served in numerous leadership positions in these organizations and received several honors for her work.
Her husband of thirty-seven years, Walter L. Tarr, preceded her in death by forty years. She leaves behind her two sons, Harold L. Tarr of New York City and Ralph W. Tarr of Calabasas, California, as well as four grandsons and 3 great grandsons.
There will be a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Northminster Presbyterian Church or Guild House.
