Mildred Viola (Millie) Crabtree

1927 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
Mildred Viola (Millie) Crabtree Obituary
Mildred (Millie) Viola Crabtree, daughter of James Oscar and Laura Mae Davidson, was born in Oklahoma in 1927, tenth out of eleven children. She entered the world early and underweight. The old country doctor said she wouldn't make it but against all odds and with the care of a loving father and mother she did make it. The family was poor and there was no welfare system to take care of them. Millie learned to work hard along with all her family members. Whether picking cotton as a young child and holding a "500 pounds in one day" record or selling Mary Kay cosmetics, and becoming number one in the nation in 1981, to ending her career as a landscape foreman, Millie always rose to the top. Her work ethic was unmatched.
Millie was married to Glenn Edward Crabtree in 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, six days prior to Glenn shipping out to serve his country in WWII. She worked two jobs while he was gone and saved enough for the couple to begin a successful custom harvesting business in McFarland, California, after Glenn returned home in December, 1946. They lived in McFarland from 1946 to 1974 and then moved to Bakersfield, California, their final home.
While in McFarland, Millie had three children and became an active volunteer in her community. She served in PTA in her children's school and in later years as a member of the Bakersfield Grand Jury. She volunteered in her church and other organizations. The couple supported and sponsored many parks and recreation sports teams. Millie made her home welcoming to family, friends and strangers. Glenn and Millie celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary 2014.
Millie is survived by her three children, Don Edward Crabtree and wife, Kathleen, (Bakersfield), David Lynn Crabtree and wife, Cyndi, (Bakersfield), Glenda Marie Baker and husband, Stanley, (Corvallis, Oregon). Millie is preceded in death by her husband, parents and all of her siblings except for one brother, David. Millie has seven grandchildren plus their spouses, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchild.
She was a woman of faith and always believed the best in everyone. She exemplified the true Christian spirit of love and acceptance. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. With grace and dignity to the very end, she finished her race on this earth strong and on her terms.
The family thanks all who cared for Millie during these past months with visits, food, calls and cards. The family deeply appreciates your love and support.
At the age of 88, in May 2015 Millie died peacefully with family around her bedside after a valiant fight of lung cancer. She is with her Lord.
Funeral Service on June 2, 2015 at 10am Green Lawn Funeral Home, 3700 River Road, Bakersfield.
