Mitchell Dee Slayman Obituary
Mitchell "Dee" Slayman April 12, 1953 - May 1, 2013 Mitchell "Dee" Slayman was born in Palm Springs, CA to Joyce and Mitchell Slayman on April 12, 1953. Dee was a long-time resident of Kern County and will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, and tenacity. He graduated from Lindsay High School in 1971, and he was a 1975 graduate of Cal Poly State University, in San Luis Obispo, CA, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business Management. While attending Cal Poly, Dee was President of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, and he enjoyed being President of the Inter-Fraternity Council. After graduation, Dee sold real state in Southern California for two years before moving back to Kern County in 1979 to pursue a career in agricultural land development. After his return to Bakersfield, Dee, in collaboration with various financial partners, used his own unique growing methods, focused on tree farming, growing a variety of fruit trees. Since his family had been involved in pomegranate farming for two generations before him, it was natural that he would specialize on that extraordinary fruit, and it eventually became his only crop and his lifelong passion. He invested in a commercial enterprise in Israel that studied the health benefits of the fruit, and he continuously worked to improve the quality of his pomegranates and the yield from his ranches. Dee consistently demonstrated his ability to not only grow successfully but to operate his wholly-owned Slayman Marketing Inc. for many years. Slayman Marketing is a vertically integrated company that grows, packs, and markets fresh pomegranates worldwide. Dee loved to travel and enjoyed a multitude of outdoor activities. He was fascinated with aviation and the freedom it provided. He received his pilot's license at age16 and, he flew at every opportunity ever since. Dee sincerely loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched. Dee's surviving family include his wife, DeAnna Jane Slayman, his stepson, Jonathan Cole, his mother Joyce Slayman, his sister, Lisa Slayman-McWalters, his brother-in-law, Jim McWalters, his mother and father-in-law Jane and Gene Harmon, his brother-in-law Michael Waller (Joy), his brother-in-law Randy Harmon (Gail), his sister-in- law Janice Schmasow (Gary), and his aunts Adele Homsey and Lucille Slayman.
