Nellie Hopps Obituary

Nellie Deane Brennan Hopps 1919 - 2010 Nellie was born to the loving parents of James and Waudessa Brennan on April 5, 1919 in Manitou, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Bakersfield in 1932 where Nellie attended Norris School. After living in California for a couple of years she returned to Oklahoma to finish her high school education. She later married Edison Hopps and moved to Loma Linda, California, where their three sons were born, Eddy, Don, and Woody. Nellie lived in Bakersfield for the last 40 years. Here, she welcomed friends and family and her door was always open, ready to feed you or give you a bed to sleep in. Her favorite pastime was visiting with friends and family in the mornings on the patio over a cup of coffee and her evenings sitting on the front porch enjoying the company of any and all who came by. Nellie was a wonderful cook, enjoying everything from backyard cookouts to her famous homemade cobblers, feeding as many as would come. She was talented musically and in earlier years played the violin, guitar, piano and organ. In her later years she enjoyed playing the organ long and loud for all to hear. The loss of hearing and advancing years of dementia unfortunately robbed her of these special delights. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Edison Hopps and more recently by her oldest son, Eddy Hopps. She is survived by her brother, Roque Brennan of Aptos, CA; sister, Amelia Bee Foutz of Bakersfield, CA; and sister, Trinnie Lee Senteney of Sacramento, CA; two sons, Donnie (wife Sandy) of The Villages, FL and Durwood Hopps of Tampa, FL; as well as special grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives. Privates services will be held. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Everyone should have an Aunt Nellie, come one come all, day time ,night time, lunch dinner or breakfast time, got problems lets talk it out....coffee, bowl of beans and the best Cocunut Creme Pie you have ever had. Put yur jammies on early, stay of late listening to stories of the old days, some exaggerated a little but we all knew she liked to tell it the way she seen it. I loved her so much and will miss her hospitality and picking up pecans. If everyone had an Aunt Nellie, then you would always have family. Her Niece Jody Qualls

If I could do one thing for the world, it would be to make sure that everyone have an aunt like my Aunt Nellie. The epitome of down home common sense blending charity and humor, Nellie was mother nature, Our Miss Brooks and Dinah Shore rolled into one big framed red head.
I loved her, and her boys. Always have, always will.

Dear Family,

Our sympathy goes out to each one of you. Wish we could have shared these moments with you.

Aunt Nellie had a good life. Always fun to be around giving advice and learning new things. Always looking out and thinking of others. We always enjoyed visiting her and talking till late at night. She always had interesting stories to tell.

May God comfort you during this time.

Love, Earlene, Helen and Aunt Sarah
