Nicholas Mario Uricchio Obituary
Nick Uricchio, a man to whom life was a wonderful party, passed away on Sunday surrounded by loved ones. Nick was born in Hartford, Connecticut. After high school, Nick spent 2 years in the army at the end of WWII, where he was attached to the 8th Communication Squadron Wing, as a cook. Upon returning home, and after a short and uninspired stint in pharmaceutical school, he met Phyllis, the love of his life. As Nick and Phyllis started their family , Nick began a career in the insurance industry. However, a growing love of golf and dining out, led him to seize upon the opportunity to manage a country club. He later opened the first of three restaurants in Connecticut.
A move to California with his wife and 4 children in the 60's, marked the beginning of a career at The Beverly Hilton. There, Nick spent many exciting years catering parties to the stars including the annual Golden Globes and Oscar After Parties. Later, as the GM of the Friar's Club , he continued to put smiles on well known comediens' faces not only with his fabulous events, but with his own quick wit and one-liners.
His restaurant career culminated in Bakersfield with his "retirement"and Uricchio's Trattoria. Bakersfield embraced Nick and son Steve's restaurant in a way only Bakersfield does, and as long as his health allowed, Nick was delighted to take care of all of his marvelous customers.
For anyone who ever spent a day or a week at our house they know the party didn't stop when Dad changed from his suit and tie into his casual wear...it only got better! Dad was a wonderful family man and treasured his time with our amazing mother, the 4 of us, and his grandchildren. He was generous to a fault, and food and laughter were never in short supply. We are all so thankful for every moment we had with this very funny, gracious, kind, and loving man.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents William and Mary, sister Marie, brother William and brother in law Larry. He leaves behind to cherish his memory...daughter Claire and husband Mark, daughter Lisa and husband Larry, son Nick and wife Marina, son Steve and wife Stephanie, grandchildren Nicole, Adam., Christina, Brian, Jackie, Zoe, David, Mia and Nicky, and great grandchildren Gavyn, Londyn and Teresa. He is survived by his sisters Ann and Nancy, sister in laws Tony and Mary, and brother in laws Pete, Bob H. and Bob M. He also leaves behind his close friend Executive Chef Raffi and all of the amazing employees past and present that helped Papa realize his dream.
Finally, the family expresses gratitude to Rosewood Skilled Nursing for all of the comfort and care Dad received during these past two years.
Per Dad's request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
In honor of Papa...please spread love and laughter each and every day.
