Norma Jean Schmedding Obituary
Norma Jean Schmedding 1924 - 2013 Norma was born November 9, 1924, in Brazil, Indiana, and moved to Bakersfield at the age of nine. She attended Bakersfield High School, followed by business college. She met Earl Schmedding while he was serving in the Air Force and stationed at Minter Field. They later married in 1944. After a brief time of living in Fresno, the couple settled in Bakersfield, where they raised their two sons. Norma worked as a court clerk until she retired at the age of 65. She was predeceased by her husband in 1992. Norma had a zest for life. She loved family get-togethers, traveling the world, visiting the coast, camping, playing bridge, and line dancing. She was active in Assistance League and donated many hours volunteering at the Bargain Box. She was a long-standing member and participant of the Theta Tau Theta sorority for Juvenile Diabetes. Norma was a gracious woman of dignity and strength that was reflected in the love for her family. Her pearls of wisdom about many aspects of life were a source of inspiration to her sons. People enjoyed Norma's positive nature and delightful sense of humor. Those left to love and honor her are her sons, Keith Schmedding and Claudia Campbell and Steve Schmedding and wife, Sheryl; grandchildren, Kristen (Mikala) Chang, Suzanne Schmedding, Lara Lea Schmedding, Brian Taylor (Betty), Garrett Taylor (Shereen), and Jeni Schmedding; great-grandchildren, Brayden Chang and Khloe Beith; her sister, Hila Shelton; and numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. The family would like to thank Hoffmann Hospice (Mark and Angelina) and the staff at Emeritus (Rosie, Loretta, Lisa, Monique, Maria) for their loving care of Norma during her final days. She will be dearly missed. A Catholic Mass for Norma Jean Schmedding, 88, who passed peacefully on January 17, 2013, will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 124 Columbus St., with a graveside to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. For condolences please visit www.greenlawnmortuaryandcemetery.com.
