Odean James Baker Obituary
Odean James Baker January 3, 1928 - November 6, 2012 Odean James Baker was born on January 3, 1928 in Prague, OK. After coming to California at the age of eight, he and his parents, Marie and Lee Baker worked and lived on Tagus Ranch. "Odean J" met and married his lifelong love, Annabelle Porter on March 9, 1949 in Bakersfield, CA. Together they had one daughter, Ruth, during their 63 years together. Odean served in the Navy during the 1950's. Prior to and after serving in the United States Navy, Odean worked as a clerk for Southern Pacific Railroad for 38 years. He spent his life working hard to provide for his family. He loved to travel with his family, often taking camping trips or visiting family in Ohio. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and fishing. In his spare time, he was always willing to offer a helping hand; sometimes putting roofs on houses or pouring cement driveways and walkways. His love of crossword puzzles often earned him crossword puzzle books from relatives. He enjoyed his faith; especially time spent reading his Bible. He and Annabelle attended First Freewill Baptist Church of Bakersfield together, with their daughter. Odean Baker was a gentle man, known by his nieces and nephews simply as "Unk". He was never known to meet anyone he did not befriend and was never known to speak an unkind word. Visitation for Odean J. Baker will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street) on Monday, November 12, 2012 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the Basham Funeral Care Chapel on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
