Olive Gadberry Obituary
Olive Gadberry July 7, 1915 - July 6, 1912 Olive Gadberry, true daughter of the Golden West. Born Olive Katherine O'Connor in Sacramento, raised and lived in Bakersfield for fifty years, attending St. Francis elementary school, Kern County Union High School (now BHS), and then Santa Barbara State (now UCSB). In the late 60's, she and dear husband Fred Gadberry retired in Long Beach. Beloved mother of Sharon, grandmother of Elena and Gabriela Giacoman, favorite aunt, inspiring teacher, loquacious world traveler, and reality TV "star." Life around Olive was never a dull moment. Her elementary school students in Lerdo, Greenfield, and Lamont were inspired to master the 3R's by writing, singing, playing instruments and producing original plays. Her students joined her "100 club" by reading 100+ books, and were rewarded throughout the year with exciting field trips and parties. She and husband Fred traveled to every continent, fording rivers in South America by car, touring Europe on $5 a day, riding motor scooters, camels and elephants and even trekking partway up Mt. Everest. In Long Beach for retirement, she served as President of St. Regis Homeowners Association for over 25 years. In the 80's she won two cases before Judge Wopner on People's Court. Unintentionally hilarious, the episodes are still occasionally shown as re-runs. She played bridge every week, and her mind was sharp until the end. Special thanks to Emily Vasconcillo and her team, who in recent years helped Olive enjoy life in her own apartment, looking out over Long Beach Harbor and the Queen Mary. Special appreciation to the Long Beach Public Library for an endless supply of large-print books, to Dial-A-Ride, and to Companion Hospice. A Celebration of Life is planned in Bakersfield for Sunday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 pm at Benji's French Basque Restaurant, 4001 Rosedale Highway). Please R.S.V.P. by email to sharongadberry@yahoo.com. Donations may be made to Companion Hospice Care or Long Beach Public Library. Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Funeral Directors www.bakersfield.com/obits
