Ouida Champness Obituary
Ouida Champness January 11, 1931 - July 24, 2012 Visitation for Ouida Champness will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles Street) on Sunday, July 29, 2012 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at RiverLakes Community Church (4301 Calloway Drive) on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Born to Jackson and Ouida Carter she was the youngest of three children. She was raised on an oil lease in Maricopa, CA where she graduated with a class of eleven from Maricopa High School in 1948. She remembers playing in the foothills, riding the family pig (Gub Gub), and practicing her music. She trained as a classical pianist and vocalist hoping to have a career in that field. But in 1950 she met and married Elwood Champness and became a devoted wife and mother. She loved and supported her husband for 55 years until his death in 2005. In 1956 with three small children she and Elwood moved from Ford City to Bakersfield. She loved and raised five children and was always their biggest encourager and supporter. She was a kind and nurturing person who was interested in many things. She was an excellent baker and cook and we all loved to taste the fruit of her labor. She loved preparing food for family gatherings. She loved flowers and colors especially pink. She liked to try new things, visit new places and she was gracious to all she met. Ouida loved the Lord and her church, (RiverLakes Community Church). She loved her Bible Study Group and looked forward to meeting with them every Wednesday. Her confidence in this life and in the life to come was in Jesus Christ and his word and on these two we who knew and loved her have confidence that she is with the Lord and at peace. Ouida is preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Champness and her brothers, James and Jack Carter. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Genevieve Champness; son and daughter-in-law, David and Karen Champness; daughter, Christine Champness; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Carrie Champness; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kim Champness; 17 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
