Patricia Louise (Lucas) Worthing Obituary
Pat was the fifth of eight children of Henry and Lilla Lucas, raised in Ontario, California. She attended St. George parochial elementary school, graduated from Chaffey High School in 1943, attended Chaffey Junior College, Immaculate Heart College, and graduated from UCLA in 1950.
She met R.W. "Bill" Worthing at a Catholic young adults meeting and they married on January 19, 1952, at St. George Catholic Church in Ontario. Pat and Bill contributed five children to the post-war baby boom, and when all were in school, Pat resumed her career as a medical laboratory microbiologist.
In 1967 the family moved from Ontario to Bakersfield. Pat continued her work as a microbiologist at Memorial Hospital while overseeing the adolescent and young adult years of her kids - there was rarely a dull moment. Over several years in the late 1970s, Pat and Bill built their dream home in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains at Shaver Springs, where they moved in 1980, at which time Pat retired. They remained at Shaver Springs after Bill retired and enjoyed the rural life. They were also founding members of Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Mission in Tollhouse.
Pat and Bill traveled extensively both before and after retirement, to Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and much of the continental United States. Pat kept busy in retirement with a wide variety of interests including collecting miniature ceramics, crafts, knitting and sewing, gardening and reading. In 2005 they moved back to Bakersfield to be closer to family. In 2009, after 57 years of marriage, Bill preceded her in death. Although Pat was physically very limited the last few years of her life she remained mentally as sharp as ever until the end.
She is survived by one brother, Philip E. Lucas of Colfax, California, her children (and spouses) Michael D. Worthing (Julie), Kathleen A. Worthing, Gregory J. Worthing (Jan) and Dana E. Lencioni (Joey), all of Bakersfield, and Col. Jeffrey A. Worthing (USAF Ret.) (Maria), of O'Fallon, Illinois, as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The family is very grateful to the staff of Glenwood Gardens Skilled Nursing Facility for the excellent and compassionate care provided to Pat for the last few years of her life.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1800 Bedford Way, Bakersfield, followed by interment at Bakersfield National Cemetery next to Bill. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the in Pat's memory.
