Patricia Ruiz Obituary
In Loving Memory Patricia JoAnne Ruiz. Patt was born in Derby, Kansas to Ida (Bruemmer) and Leo Kennedy. As a young girl, she moved with her family, including her brothers Ray, Francis, and Robert, from their farm in Derby to Downey, California. They then settled in Fresno, where she grew up and graduated from San Joaquin Memorial High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Fresno State University, where she met her future husband, Manuel Ruiz, as a member of the Catholic Social Club. They married in 1961, moved to Bakersfield, and raised four children, all of whom graduated from Garces Memorial High School. During her 30-year career as an elementary teacher, Patt first taught in Fresno, and then was hired by the Bakersfield City School District as the first Special Education Resource Specialist in Kern County, and taught at Williams, Emerson, and Horace Mann Elementary Schools. During this time she earned a Master's Degree in Special Education. Patt was active in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, serving as a teacher and the principal of the elementary religious education program (C.C.D.).
She and Manuel enjoyed traveling with friends and family to cities throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe, including extended visits to Kansas to visit her brother and sister-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. After retiring in 1996 and continuing her lifelong vocation to help children, Patt served for many years as a member and volunteer at the Bargain Box, which supports the Operation School Bell program of the Assistance League of Bakersfield. She also spent hours entertaining her four grandchildren during their frequent visits to her home. Patt is preceded in death by her father, Leo Kennedy, mother, Ida Kennedy, and her brothers, Hugh (Francis) Kennedy, F.S.C, and Robert Kennedy.
Patt is survived by her husband Manuel; her brother Ray Kennedy and his wife Tommie; her sister-in-law Dolores Kennedy; her children, Christine, Cynthia, Eric and David; her grandchildren, Evan, Monica, Kevin, and Sofia; and her nieces and nephews.
