Pearl Irene Corbett March 29, 1925 - May 11, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce that our beloved mother and grandmother, Pearl Corbett, passed away on May 11, 2012, in Bakersfield after a lengthy illness. Pearl was born March 29, 1925, to Abram Lowen and Justina Gossen in Hepburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. Pearl followed her two older sisters and emigrated to Bakersfield at the age of 18 and became a U.S. citizen. Pearl was a dedicated homemaker for over 65 years. She was passionate about her morning coffee, crossword puzzles, quilting, computers, gardening, reading, and her faith in Jesus Christ. She extended a helping hand to the less fortunate her entire life, providing food, furniture, and sewing numerous quilts for the needy and her church. She also delivered Meals on Wheels until she quit driving at 81. Pearl was the matriarch who for decades brought two blended families into her home for unforgettable birthday and holiday celebrations. She continued, well into her 80s, to prepare Wednesday night dinners for any family member that could attend. At Christmas and Thanksgiving, there were always new faces because she made sure no one went without a family during the holidays, whether they were related or not. She was a fixture at the Marie Callender's on Oswell St. in Northeast Bakersfield, where she would hold court each Saturday morning, discussing religion, politics, current events, or family business with friends, her children, or anyone who stopped by. Pearl made friends wherever she went. She enjoyed life, but always put her family and faith above all. Pearl was preceded in death by her father, Abram Lowen; mother, Justina Gossen; husbands, Ernest P. Ricou and Douglas Corbett; and sisters, Bertha Unruh and Nettie Kerley. She is survived by her children, sons, Robert Ricou (Sharlene), Jim Corbett (Judy), and Brian Corbett (Carolyn); and daughters, Rene Sanabia and Tracy Corbett, all of Bakersfield, and Erin Baldwin of Victorville; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
