Ralph Earl Howlett 5/11/1936 - 12/28/2012 Ralph was born May 11, 1936 in Otis, Colorado, the only son of Russell Moreland Howlett & Nina Mabel White. Ralph was 7 years old when his family moved to Bakersfield. He graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1954 where he was on the swim team and was ASB President. He joined the US Navy after high school and served for 2 years on the submarines USS Bluegill & USS Bream. He married his high school sweetheart Betty Hill and together they raised their family of 4 children. After his stint in the Navy, Ralph attended Bakersfield College, then graduated with a Business degree from San Jose State in 1961. In 1965 Ralph began his career with the Kern County Probation Department retiring after 30 years as Probation Division Director of Juvenile Hall in July 1995. He loved working at the Probation Department and all the people with whom he worked. In 1992 Ralph married Sylvia Berkshire. He and Sylvia had great adventures together, including trips to Sylvia's family home in England, as well as Australia, Mexico, fun trips to Vegas and other places closer to home. Ralph was a huge NASCAR fan. He was a talented bowler, for a number of years his high average was 200+. In the early years he planned many wonderful camping trips for his family to a different California national park each summer. Ralph had a love of reading, World War 2 history, all types of aircraft and was a master at his BBQ. When asked his name he would often say "You don't scream it, you don't yell it, you HOWLETT!" Ralph served for 20 years on the Kern Federal Credit Union Credit Committee and served on the Board of Directors from 1989-1995, as Chairman in his final year. He served on the Board of Directors for the Probation Auxiliary working as its President for two years. He served on and as President of the Kern City Civic Association. Ralph was a blood donor and a member of the 12 Gallon Club at the Houchin Community Blood Bank. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years Sylvia; his sister Ruth & Byron Gregory; and sister Pat Taylor. He is also survived by his children John & Debbie Howlett, Lee Ann & Stan Bergen, Laurie Howlett & Mark Price, and David & Shelly Howlett; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and his special cat Midnight. The family would like to extend thanks to Menchie and all the staff at Calloway Gardens for their loving care of Ralph during his final months.
