Regina Caroline Hulsy December 23, 1915 - October 18, 2010 Services for Regina Hulsy will take place Monday, October 25, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1800 Bedford Way, Bakersfield, CA. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 12:30 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow immediately at Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Blvd. Regina Caroline Hulsy was born in San Francisco on December 23, 1915, the first of five children born to Rose and John Scott. She was baptized at St. Brigid's and attended St. Brigid's School until the second grade, when her father, Chief Engineer of the Port of San Francisco, after his son's diagnosis of hyperactivity, took the recommendation of his son's doctor to move his family out of the city. John's new job, as Pipeline Manager with Associated Oil, took the family to the "country" and the numerous pipeline stations up and down the state, including McKittrick, Taft, Halfway Station, Nichols, and Patterson. Regina dearly loved her brothers, Jack, Bill, and baby Walter, who died of polio, and her little sister Jeanette. She was a great help to her mother with the little ones. She was an outstanding student, with a photographic memory and a special love of literature. She was promoted several times and graduated at 16 at the top of her class at Patterson High School. Regina returned to her beloved San Francisco for college, earning a degree in English from San Francisco State and a teaching credential from University of California at Berkeley. The job market was tight in those Depression years, so she was happy when Superintendent Spindt offered her a part-time job teaching History at Kern County Union High School; fortunately, the job became full-time on the second day of the semester. She arrived in Bakersfield by train dressed like a San Franciscan, wearing a yellow wool suit, with a beaver hat, leather gloves, and alligator shoes. That September heat was a true welcome to Bakersfield! Regina loved her students, teaching all her classes in a tent in Elm Grove. A well-regarded teacher, she was offered the job of chairman of the History Department at soon-to-open East Bakersfield High School. She was honored by Californian columnist Jim Day as one of Bakersfield's ten most beautiful young women. Regina's life took an important turn when she met young attorney William R. Hulsy on a blind date. Their happy marriage produced three sons and a daughter and lasted until Bill's death in 1982. No man could ever compare to Bill in Regina's eyes! The war years were spent near Washington, D.C. where Bill served in the U.S. Navy as an attorney for the O.P.A. Back in Bakersfield, the couple enjoyed family camping trips, Las Amigas Dance Club, East Bakersfield Lion's Club activities, their wonderful neighbors in La Cresta, and their travels to Europe. She treasured seeing her relatives at the bi-annual Scott Family Picnic. After her father's death, Regina's mother happily lived out her life with Regina and Bill in Bakersfield. Regina was actively involved in the community, serving as President of Longfellow School P.T.A., for years as an election precinct worker, and as President of the Assistance League of Bakersfield, where her heart was touched by helping the Operation School Bell children. She enjoyed her Bridge Club friends and belonged to a knitting club Bill referred to as "The Knitting Bags," whose members chatted more than knitted! She was a loving fifty-plus year member of Chapter IW P.E.O. and an active participant in the IW Book Club. Regina loved leading local students on tours of the court house; in her 80's she served on the Kern County Grand Jury. She supported and encouraged her children in all their endeavors, serving as room-mother, Brownie leader, and den-mother many times over. She delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was totally devoted to her Catholic faith. Regina was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her brothers Jack, Bill, and Walter; and her grandson, Stephen Hulsy. She is survived by her sister, Jeanette Macaulay of Sonoma; sister- in-law, Rita Scott of Alameda; and her sons, William S. Hulsy (Karen) of Laguna Hills, Robert S. Hulsy (Kathe) of Morristown, New Jersey, James R. Hulsy (Bonny) of Bakersfield; daughter, Barbara Fowler (Gary) of Bakersfield; and grandchildren, William Hulsy (Catharine), Eric Hulsy (Sara), Edward Hulsy (Eden), Mary Hulsy Hulse (Lincoln), Robert Hulsy, Michael Hulsy (Meaghan), Patrick Hulsy, Brenna Fowler-Charatsaris (Christopher), Shannon Fowler-Gormley (Brendan), Ryan Alsop (Melissa), Chase Alsop, Kaitlin Hulsy, and Caroline Hulsy. She had 14 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. The Hulsy children appreciate the wonderful care given to their mother by Dr. William Baker, Jr. and Dr. Sam Singh, the angelic kindness of Lorraine Abbot and Carol Villarreal, and the helpfulness of Ana and Felicia of Hoffman Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dominican Shrine of St. Jude, 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco 94165, the St. Vincent De Paul Center, 300 Baker Street, Bakersfield 93305, or the charity of your choice.
