Richard Leon Wells Obituary
Richard Leon Wells, 89, years of age, passed away at home last Friday surrounded by family. Born to King David Wells and Elsie Mary Wells near Gracemont, in Caddo County, Oklahoma. He was the oldest of four boys. His brother are J.D. (Deceased), Frances (Deceased) and Allan (living).
The Wells family moved around a lot while in Oklahoma. Every year he enrolled in a new school. They came to California with thousands of other "Okies" to work in the fields up and down the San Joaquin Valley.
Upon his eighteenth Birthday he enlisted in the Army, Bootcamp and further training was to prepare him for deployment to the Pacific Theater of War. However, hostilities -aka Battle of the Buldge- necessitated his deployment to Europe following Germany's surrender his Infantry Division, the 97th was redeployed to Japan to serve as occupation forces. He served as an M.P. during nine months there.
Returning to the states he met the love of his life, Jewell Brown Spurlock. They soon married and had a large family with five children, which led to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were married 66 years before the death of Jewell (Brownie) last September.
Richard and Jewell were strong Christians and attended Highland Church of Christ, helping out any way possible. They will be deeply missed by the loving group of friends.
Richard's interment will be held at The Bakersfield National Cemetery on Friday, February 13th at 1:15pm.
