Robert Elmer Kitchen Obituary
Robert Elmer Kitchen April 27, 1916 ~ November 6, 2013 Robert Kitchen passed away peacefully at his home the morning of November 6, 2013 surrounded by several members of his immediate family and attended by one of his devoted caregivers. He had lived 97 remarkable years! Bob was born and raised in Bakersfield and, until recently, delighted in taking relatives on tours of the city, remembering in great detail, the "establishments" that were here when he was a boy. His birth certificate states that his parents lived at 2124 22nd St. ~ a home that still stands today. Many will remember Bob's place of business, Kitchen-Boyd Lincoln Mercury on Chester Ave., established by his father, Elmer Kitchen, in 1917 (at the time it was the oldest Lincoln-Mercury dealership west of the Mississippi). The original dealership was housed in a converted livery stable on 18th St., just off Chester Ave. Bob sold the business in 1985. A role model for us all, his honesty, integrity, intelligence, generosity and knee-slapping sense of humor will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death many years ago by his brother, Willard. His beautiful wife of 76 years, Virginia, passed away in the summer of 2012. He is survived by their two children, Barbara Rutner (and husband, Stan), Phil Kitchen (and wife, Tosi), five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and his devoted side-kick Fred Suniga. The family offers its deepest thanks to the remarkable caregivers from Alternative Care Agency, whose devotion to both Bob and Virginia enriched their lives immeasurably. Our heartfelt thanks, also, goes to Hoffman Hospice, who eased us through his final days with such great sensitivity. The family suggests that donations in Bob's memory be made to Hoffman Hospice. Relatives and close friends are invited to a celebration of his life at the family home on November 16th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. www.bakersfield.com/obits
