Robert Hovis Obituary

Robert Stone Hovis, LCDR, USN January 15, 1938 - September 11, 2010 Robert Stone Hovis, LCDR, USN Born in Lovell, Wyoming, January 15, 1938, Robert "Bob" Stone Hovis (72) of McGaheysville, passed away Saturday, September 11th, after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby S. Hovis and James D. Hovis, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Penny; daughters, Beth Hovis Burrows and Catherine Hovis; son-in-law, Mark Burrows and grandchildren, Scott and Margaret Burrows. He is also survived by his beloved aunt, Harriett Donovan; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Lu-ann Hovis, and their families. Bob served his country for 30 years as an officer in the Medical Service Corp of the United States Navy. He was a Vietnam veteran and also served at duty stations in Guam, California, Illinois, Okinawa, and Washington, DC. After retiring in 1989, he and Penny settled in the Shenandoah Valley in 2002, away from the hectic pace of Northern Virginia but still close to the daughters he loved and the grandchildren who were the light of his life. Bob loved history, photography, and travel. Anyone who visited during their time in Virginia knows Bob was a Civil War buff and aspiring battle field tour guide. He was also an avid coin and stamp collector and loved to ski and fly kites. The family extends much love to the many friends and family who helped care for Bob during his illness. You have touched our hearts. Bob will be honored with a committal of ashes, in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will announce the details of this ceremony when arrangements have been made. www.bakersfield.com/obits

Have lots of fond memories of Bob. I can still picture him leading the Bakersfield High School Driller Band. A warm, friendly person whom I admired and who will live on in my heart. My condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and all. A loss to many of us.
