Rose Mary Poncetta Massocca October 28, 1922 - March 09, 2013 Rose Massocca , (90), passed March 9, 2013 peacefully in San Rafael, California. Rose was born in Bakersfield, California on October 28, 1922, on the family farm south of Bakersfield to parents Burt and Maria Poncetta. She was raised and worked with her brothers Emilio and Elmo, sisters Jean and Mary on the Poncetta Farm through the depression years in Bakersfield and attended Panama elementary school and Kern County (Bakersfield) High School. Rose also worked for Vi's Coffee Shop and the Safeway Market in the Greenfield area prior to her marriage. In 1957 Rose married John Massocca, also of Bakersfield, at the Mission in Santa Barbara. They spent their years in Bakersfield busy with family and friends and raising their only son Stephen in Oildale. In 1970, John's career with Chevron required a move from Bakersfield to San Rafael, Ca. After getting settled Rose and John made lots of new friends and were surrounded by relatives in San Francisco and Lafayette. They were also very involved in their parish church. John and Rose ultimately retired in San Rafael. Rose was so fun loving and full of life. John and Rose were the Best Italian cooks anywhere. They had a large vegetable garden and what they didn't cook or can they gave away to friends and neighbors. Rose's home was always filled with the beautiful flowers she grew. She really had a Green Thumb. They never meet a stranger and everyone was always welcome in their home. Rose never wanted you to leave her house hungry. Rose only knew the Italian way, there was always lots of love and plenty to eat and drink. Rose is survived by her husband John of 55 years, son Stephen and his wife Ann Marie, grandsons John and Michael of San Francisco. Sisters Jean Valente of Lafayette, Ca ,and Mary Costa, Sister-in-laws Elsie and Dorina Poncetta of Bakersfield. Plus many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Bay Area, Turlock, Ca, Orange County, and Bakersfield. Funeral services will be held at the San Rafael Mission on March 23 @ 11:00 a.m. and a Memorial service in Bakersfield at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on April 13 @ 11:00 a.m.. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Oak Hill School or San Francisco Botanical Gardens.
