Roy Eugene Anthes Obituary

Beset with pain, your physical body is gone, but your spirit is free and heaven-bound. We rejoice with the angels that you are having a reunion with so many loved ones in heaven. We were blessed to have you with us for 91 years and will miss you and your playful sense of humor.

Roy was born in Illinois on January 26, 1925, where he lived until 1944. After graduation from high school, he moved to California and married his high school sweetheart Geneva. He was the only child of Richard Gillis and Florence Beryl Anthes. He is survived by his daughter Vickie Spivy Anderson (Mac), grandsons David Spivy (Kim), Mike Spivy (Meredith), his son Dick Anthes (Sheri), granddaughter Christina Anthes, grandson Richard Anthes (Cindy), two step-daughters Jennifer Veith (Shawn), and Jackie Chase, nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Geneva, his youngest son Roy and his parents Richard and Beryl.

Dad had a 24-year career with the Golden Crust Bakery serving as a driver and then as sales manager. When the bakery closed in 1968, he and Mom moved to Arizona where Dad worked as a public relations liaison for Sun Health Systems until his retirement in 1980. He and Mom moved back to Bakersfield in 2004.

Proud of his club affiliations, dad was a member of Masonic Lodge #224, Scottish Rite and the Kern County Shrine Club of the Al Malaikah Temple. He was a member of the Westside Church of Christ.

Dad loved sports of all kinds, but golf was his first love. He played on some of the most beautiful courses in the US and Hawaii. He was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan and excited that this could be their year to go all the way. Dad was an avid reader with an amazing memory. He purchased a computer in his eighties and loved keeping up with Facebook friends. He always had time for a game of poker or blackjack.

The family would like to thank Optimal Hospice, A & A Care Home, BFMC and Dr. Bouldoukian and staff for their outstanding care of dad, as well as friends and family for prayers and support these past few months. Donations can be made on his behalf; payable to and mailed to KCSC, 700 South P Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304.

The family will have a celebration of life at a later date. His final resting place will be Ava, Illinois near Mom and son, Roy.
