ROY SAUNDERS Obituary
Roy Saunders, also known as Fred to many, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015 in a Las Vegas hospital after a brief battle with metastasized prostate cancer.
He had been cancer free 5 years before it reappeared. Roy was born to Roy J. and Annabelle Saunders in Monterey Park, California. He attended Montebello High School and graduated from Cal State Fullerton with BA degrees in Marketing and Business Administration. In 1967 he met the love of his life, Jo Anne. They married in 1972. Roy went to work for Atlantic Richfield in 1972 and was on the team that developed the first AM PM Mini Market.
He worked for ARCO until 1978 when he went to work for Jaco Oil/Fastrip Food Stores in Bakersfield, California.He continued his successful career in the gas station/convenience store business always on the lookout for a prime location to build a new store. Roy worked for Jaco Oil until his retirement in December, 2013.
Throughout his life he enjoyed lots of outdoor activities including dirt bike riding in the California desert; boating/fishing on the Colorado River system; fishing/camping around the Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California; and his passion, golfing. Golfing always found its way into their many travels. Whether he was working or on vacation, he always kept a sharp eye out for a good investment. As a dedicated and hard worker, he always made plenty of time for his family.
Roy is survived by his wife of 42 years Jo Anne, sons Michael and David, sister Carol and husband Dale, brother-in-law Robert and wife Michele and daughter Ashley and son Matthew, nieces Heather and husband John, and Erika and husband Brian and daughters Madilynn and Brooke.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Church, 900 H St., Bakersfield, CA., with Monsignor Perry Kavookjian officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the church hall. All are invited. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a small donation to the building fund at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 12803 Montbatten Place, Bakersfield, CA 93312-6799 would be greatly appreciated. It was a cause that was near and dear to Roy's heart. Roy's large presence will be greatly missed!
