Ruth Dykes Obituary

Ruth Dee Dykes May 24, 1922 - November 5, 2010 Ruth Dee Dykes, 88, passed away on November 5, 2010. Born in Binger, Oklahoma on May 24, 1922, to Robert William and Bessie Blanche Nuttle. She married Sgt. Eddie Sargent of Sickles, Oklahoma in 1940 and had a daughter, Connie Ruth. After relocating to California after World War II, Dee married Bill Dykes in 1953. They made their home for many years in the Cuyama Valley where she raised a family to whom she was deeply devoted. Their son, William Dee, was born in 1954 and their daughter, Robyn Lynn, was born in 1957. Dee enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Pine Mountain Club where she played countless rounds of golf and created memorable holiday gatherings. She was famous in her family for her chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin pie, angel food cake and french toast and was well known outside the family for her kind, caring nature and beautiful blue eyes. Dee was an avid sports fan, supporting not only the teams coached by her husband and daughter, but several college teams and, most notably, the Los Angeles Lakers. She and her husband moved to Taft in 1996, so that they could care for her mother. Dee was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Dykes, in 1999, and she continued to live independently and happily, surrounded by several children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She moved to Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield in 2009 where she tried to recover from a broken hip and cancer. When she passed away she was surrounded by family. She is survived by her sister, Mildred Lockheart, of Bakersfield; her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Harry Geivet of Shafter; her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Vicky Dykes of Houston, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Byron Nelson of Cochiti Lake, NM; step-sons, John and Joe Dykes and step-daughter, Cindy Foley; her grandchildren, Kimber Boswell, Sarah Hamblin, Wil Bernhardt, Kathryn Taylor and Jessica Dykes; several step-grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Services for Dee were held at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft on Monday, November 8, 2010, where she was interred next to her devoted husband, Bill. The family requests that any donations be made to Hoffman Hospice in Bakersfield. The arrangements were under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral. www.ericksonandbrown.com Erickson & Brown Funeral Home www.bakersfield.com/obits

I am so sorry to hear today of Mrs. Dykes' passing. I remember her as such a very nice, very sweet person who seemed to love and enjoy all of Coach Dykes' players. Coach Bill and Dee Dykes were wonderful people and we were fortunate to have them in our lives as we were growing up.
