Ruth Handel Obituary
Ruth Handel, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 27, 2015 at her home in Bakersfield, CA. Ruth was born on January 2, 1919 in Lodi, CA to Adolf and Bertha Kirschenmann. At the age of 3 months old, her family moved to Shafter, CA. where she grew up. Ruth was the second of five children. She attended local schools in Shafter where she graduated from Shafter High School in 1937. On December 15th of 1937 she married O.D. Handel of Shafter, CA. where they made their home on their farm. In 1964 they moved to Bakersfield, CA. where they lived until 1974, when they moved to Shell Beach, CA. Ruth continued to live in her home in Shell Beach after the death of her husband. In 2005, she moved to Bakersfield, CA. to be closer to family.
Ruth was a very artistic person. She was an accomplished artist, painting numerous paintings which she shared with her family. During her lifetime she designed and had three homes built to her specifications. She also did ceramic painting, enjoyed crafts and loved working in her yard. She was an excellent cook and especially loved making many old German family recipes which she shared with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling and visited several countries around the world, but for her the best times during her life were when she spent time with her family.
Ruth is survived by her son Dennis O. Handel and his wife Janice of Bakersfield, CA; a daughter Janice Vannatta and lifelong partner Eva Estermann of Graton, CA; three grandchildren, Donald Handel of Rancho Mirage, CA, Christine Handel of Aliso Viejo, CA, Carmen Selfridge and her husband Bruce of Healdsburg, CA; four great-grandchildren, Christian Link of Aliso Viejo, CA., Cassie Handel of Bakersfield, CA., John Selfridge and his fiancee Antonina (Lizzi) Entler of Oakland, CA., Aubrey Selfridge and his partner Alexandra (Lexa) Spruce of Cloverdale, CA.; and one great-great granddaughter Bailey Marie Selfridge of Cloverdale, CA. She is also survived by her sister Rhoda Roscamp of Santa Maria, CA.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband O.D. Handel, her parents Adolf and Bertha Kirschenmann, her brothers Wilbert Kirschenmann, Walter Kirschenmann and her sister Lenora Preszler.
The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to Kay Tye, Luella Jackson, Continuum Senior Health Care Management and Hoffman Hospice for their care of Ruth before and during her illness.
Graveside services will be held at 10am on Friday April 3, at the Shafter Memorial Park. Funeral arrangement by Peters Funeral Home, 844 East Lerdo Highway, Shafter, CA.
