Ms. Ruthie
July 5, 1920 - May 31, 2003
Ms. Ruthie peacefully slipped away Saturday evening, May 31, after a five-month battle with cancer. She was surrounded in death, as she was in life, with the love of her family. Ruth touched many lives with her strength, integrity, kindness, and humor.
Born in Rendville, OH, Ruth graduated from East High in Columbus, OH, and spent her adult years in Detroit, MI. She moved to Bakersfield after retiring from Detroit Public Schools in 1987. A longtime volunteer at Bakersfields Walter Stiern Middle School, she helped to establish its library.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas L. Cassells, and brother George W. Chilton, Jr. She is survived by her brother Earl W. Chilton of Columbus, OH; daughter Annis L. Cassells and partner Judy McDole of Bakersfield; son Thomas L. Cassells, Jr. and wife Delores of Hampton, VA; and daughter Reenie L. Cassells of Detroit, MI. She leaves grandchildren: Amina Sanchez and husband Juan of Los Angeles, CA; Asila Calhoun and husband David Swerdlick of Chapel Hill, NC; Tarik Cassells and Tamika Paige and husband Rodney of Hampton, VA; and five great-grandchildren. Ms. Ruthie also leaves behind other loving relatives, a large extended family, and numerous friends, many of whom called her Mama or Granny.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, in the Fireside Room at the First Congregational Church, located at Stockdale Highway and Real Road.
The Cassells family deeply appreciates all of the love, prayers, and support received throughout Ruths struggle with cancer. Many thanks to the staff at Memorial Skilled Nursing Unit for their kindness and care. A special thank you to Janice Cotton for the excellent, loving care and comfort she provided during Ruths last weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in memory of Ruth Cassells to Hoffman Hospice, 5300 California Avenue, Suite #1, Bakersfield, CA 93309.
