Ruth Spence (Taylor) Cross July 15, 1918- November 27, 2012 Ruth was born July 15, 1918 in Hiawatha, Kansas. She grew up in Hiawatha and later graduated from Baker College, Kansas where she met her future husband, Donald Wayne Taylor. They were wed on Sept 1, 1940 and had four children. One of them, Barbara Kathryn, died at the age of four. They spent many happy years together living on the Stanford University campus adjacent to Palo Alto, California, and, later, in North Haven, Connecticut. After the death of her first husband, Donald, in 1975, she moved with her youngest son, Roderic, back to Palo Alto. There, she met and married John F. Cross on June 17, 1984. They made a happy home in Palo Alto before moving in 2008 to the Rosewood Retirement Center in Bakersfield in order to be near two of their children. She is preceded in death by her parents Ed and Julia Spence, her first husband, Donald Taylor, her brother, Paul Spence, and her daughter, Barbara Kathryn Taylor. She is survived by her husband John Cross, her children Roderic West Taylor, Laird Edwin Taylor and his wife Pamela, as well as their children, Alan Curtis Taylor and Clifton Lee Taylor, and her daughter Patricia Ann Taylor-Hummon and her husband David Hummon, as well as their children Matt Taylor Hummon and Ben Taylor Hummon. She is also survived by John's five children and their families as well as five great-grandchildren. Ruth had a great love of reading, playing bridge, dancing and travel with her husband John. She will be remembered for the great love she bestowed on all her family members. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Even in the last years of her life, she enjoyed so much the visits from her great-grandchildren, Zoe, Marco, and Erica. Services will be private.
