Samuel C. Barnes Obituary
Sam died peacefully at home on July 4, 2015 at the age of 86. He is survived by Esta, his wife of nearly 60 years and his children Bradley (Julie) and Brenda. His grandchildren are Katie, Kelly, Laurie, Andrew, and Blake. His great granddaughter is Emersyn. He is also survived by his sister Lois (Capt. Bill) Roark and was predeceased by his sister Rita (Ernie) Schnaidt.
Sam was born on May 10, 1929 in Inglewood, CA to Orley "Barney" and Violeta May Barnes. He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1947. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army in Japan. While in Japan, he climbed to the top of Mount Fuji. He attended Bakersfield College and graduated from the California School of Podiatric Medicine in 1960 and began his practice in Bakersfield. He enjoyed his profession and was also an avid outdoorsman. Water skiing and camping during the summers at Bass Lake were fond memories of his youth. The family enjoyed good times at Shaver Lake. Sam and Esta traveled extensively, visiting five of the seven continents of the world. He was a past Commander of the American Legion Post 26 and a long time member of the Bakersfield Elks Lodge.
Sam fought hard to stay with us. Lymphoma of the throat was the beginning of the decline in his health. We joked that he had nine lives, since he recovered from so many serious medical problems.
We appreciate the numerous doctors and medical professionals that helped care for him over the past several years.
Services will be held at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Ave on Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on Monday, July 27th at 10:45 a.m. 30338 East Bear Mtn. Blvd., Arvin.
