Serafin Lara Obituary

Serafin F. Lara June 4, 1930 - January 11, 2011 Serafin passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 11, 2011. He was a provider and dedicated his life to his family. Serafin is preceded in death by his wife, Frances B. Lara, and his grandson, Gabriel Salcido. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lara Drakos and her children, Ryan, Zachary and Nathan; John and Shirley Salcido and their children John, Shelly and Robert; Manuel and Rosario Salcido and their children Letty and Julie; Frank Salcido and his children Fabian and Richard; Patsy and Joe Jaquez and their children, Christopher and Tony; and Rachel Romero and her children Jennifer, John, and Michael, as well as 20 great-grandchildren. Serafin was a humble man who was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States in 1942 and lived in Bakersfield for over fifty years. With hard work and diligence, he built up a successful landscaping business "SF Lara Gardening" and was proud to have achieved the American dream. For over forty years, Serafin was known in the community as a hard working individual who brought joy to many through his amazing gardening and landscaping skills. His love of the outdoors and passion for his life's work came second only to his love for his family. He will be deeply missed. Since the passing of his wife in 2009, Serafin longed for her companionship. Serafin has reunited with his late wife, Frances, and they are now living in peace and splendor with our Lord. "We Love You Mister." Viewing will be Monday, January 17, at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara, from 2-8 p.m. On Tuesday, January 18, a Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m., followed by Mass at St. Francis Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, California. Gramps, I had a dream about you the other day and am thinking about you. I miss you and grandma so much. Thank you for being such a great grandpa. I'm sure right now you're on the bank of a beautiful river fishing and thanking God for his beautiful creation.

Happy Birthday Mister!!... That was our saying every time we greeted each other on any given day. Well, only a few more days left until I complete my full year of duty serving in Afghanistan. I know we had agreed in having a large Welcome Home BBQ at your house with you at the ready on the grill, but I am sad to say that our plans have changed. I do want to thank you and Grandma for your guidance and protection throughout my life, especially this last year. It must have been difficult and challenging for you to be along my side here in the sand since there is a lack of vegetation in the area of where I am assigned. Thank you for sticking with me during this desolate journey. Mister, although you will always be missed; you shall continue to be in my thoughts at every garden in life.

Papafin, since grandma passed, you were never the same. I could see the loneliness in your eyes even when you had people around you. I knew you deeply missed grandma. It made me sad when you told me you would go to the cemetery by yourself to spend time with her. I am so glad you are at peace. It hurts me in my heart to know that I no longer have my grandparents. You two have been a HUGE part of my life. I will always cherish the stories you told me along with the things you (and grams) taught me. You will forever be missed. I love you two so much, Jen

Serafin, you will always be kneeling by our fence with little CC, challenging me on whether or not I can grow something. My garden is beautiful because of you! You will forever remain in my mind and heart wherever my garden grows. I will miss you and our talks by the fence. love, Samantha
